I had been learning how to spin and weave natural fibers, and concluded that it would be nice to raise my own fiber. So off we went searching for some Cashmere goats. Little did we know on December 28, 1994 that when we brought home to Monroe, WA our first 16 beautiful, fluffy and fat does, that four days later we would be immersed into quick "midwife" education as those "fat, fluffy" does began kidding! The next several years our education of goats has grown along with the herd now being around 90 goats, including one of the original Embryo Transplant does, which is how these goats were imported into the United States. In October of 1997 we moved ourselves and our herd to our 115 acres in Finley Canyon near Twisp, Wa.
Our herd is kept current on vaccinations of Bo-Se and CD/T as well as routine dewormings and delousing. Their summer dining includes daytimes foraging on the state forest land surrounding our property, carefully protected by our Maremma dogs, Casey and Kelly. We have found the foraging to produce goats with a low parasite problem as well as developing them to be strong and vigorous, producing nice fiber. We keep a few bucks for the herd, penned separate from the does. Our herd in previous years has tested negative for CL and CAE. I only purchase bucks from herds that have carefully done the same, to protect the health of our girls. We do a combination of shearing fiber to have it processed in Canada, as well as hand combing some fiber. I do keep some fiber for myself but also offer yarns, and fibers for sale.
Our breeding program has been improving the fiber length, crimp and fineness with each passing year. We have had several bucks and does with award winning fibers at large shows in the Northwest. We have been earning awards with our herd since starting the herd. One of our bucks, Dark Warrior, has won several cash awards for his Best Combed Buck fleeces as have several of his offspring. Some of his awards are: 1998: Best combed buck- Mt Vernon Wa- judge Linda Pardon and 1st/jr champion buck at NWCA at Canby OFFF under judge Susan Stutz. in '99 he was Best Buck, Best Combed Cashmere & Best Hand Spinning Fleece at NWFF in Monroe Wa under Marti Wall.
Some of our 2000 awards are:
June 2000 yearling buck Northwest Cashmere Association RGCH Sept 2000 doe Oregon Flock & Fiber Festival Champion Sept 2000 all fibers Oregon Flock & Fiber Festival RGCH (this includes the fibers of all species of animals competing- including cashmere) Sept 2000 raw fiber Oregon Flock & Fiber Festival Best handcombed fleece 2001 Buck Best in Show to Dark Warrior
